Knowledge Organisers and Self-Quizzing

Student Guide      Parent Guide

Each term, you will receive a Knowledge Organiser for every subject. This booklet contains all the key knowledge you need to learn and remember. It also sets out your homework expectations for the term, so you know exactly what to focus on.

Alongside this, you will be given a Knowledge Retriever (an A5 or A4 exercise book). This is where you will complete your self-quizzing.

Self-quizzing is one of the most effective ways to learn. It helps you move knowledge into your long-term memory, so you can recall it confidently in lessons, assessments, and exams.

To self-quiz successfully, you will use the “Fetch, Flip, Check, Repeat” method:

  • Fetch – Write down everything you can remember from the Knowledge Organiser
  • Flip – Check your answers against the organiser
  • Check – Identify what you got right and what you missed
  • Repeat – Go again to improve your recall

By completing this regularly, you will build strong knowledge over time and be better prepared for success.

To optimise the effectiveness of self-quizzing, students must write out knowledge from memory, using the Fetch, Flip, Check and Repeat method, and must not copy. Your child will have extensive training in school on how to do their self-quizzing. Your child will be expected to bring in their Knowledge Retriever and Knowledge Organiser every day to school.

Supporting Your Child: Feedback and Self-Quizzing

Form Tutors will regularly check your child’s Knowledge Organiser and Knowledge Retriever, providing feedback to support them in meeting expectations and improving over time.

How to Self-Quiz: Fetch, Flip, Check, Repeat

This is the method all students use to learn their Knowledge Organisers effectively.

FETCH: Read a small section (a few bullet points or sentences) from your Knowledge Organiser and focus on memorising it carefully. Pay attention to spelling, key terms, and how the information is written.

FLIP: Close or cover your Knowledge Organiser. In your Knowledge Retriever, write down everything you can remember. Do not look back—this is where the real learning happens.

CHECK: Open your Knowledge Organiser and check your work using a different coloured pen.

Tick what is correct

  • Correct any mistakes directly above your work
  • Lots of corrections mean you are learning well.

REPEAT: Go again. Build up the amount you can remember each time. Keep using the process until you have completed the required amount of work.

Expectations

Students are expected to:

  • Complete the required number of pages
  • Include a title and date on every page
  • Use Fetch, Flip, Check, Repeat every time
  • Not copy directly from the Knowledge Organiser
  • Keep presentation neat and organised
  • Leave no more than three blank lines per page
  • Bring their Knowledge Organiser and Knowledge Retriever to school every day

Key Terms
