Assessment and Retrieval Testing

All students in Key Stage 3 complete regular Knowledge Organiser tests to help them revisit and secure key knowledge.

Subject Curriculum Time Knowledge Organiser Testing
Subjects taught 4 or more times per week (e.g. English, Mathematics, Science) Two tests per half term, 15 questions per test
Subjects taught 1–3 times per week (e.g. Languages, Humanities, PE, Art, Technology, Performing Arts) One test per half term, 10 questions per test

Our expectations

  • Tests are standardised within departments to ensure consistency.
  • Students are expected to achieve 80% or above.
  • In some lower prior attainment groups, the expected threshold may be adjusted to 60%.
  • Students who do not meet the expected standard will complete a further opportunity to demonstrate secure knowledge.
  • Progress is tracked so that staff can identify where additional support may be needed.

Supporting Learning at Home

Parents and carers can play an important role in helping students succeed by encouraging regular short revision sessions using Knowledge Organisers.

Useful strategies include:

  • Cover and recall
  • Self-quizzing
  • Flashcards
  • Testing key vocabulary aloud
  • Short, repeated revision sessions rather than cramming

Why This Matters

Our aim is simple: to ensure students remember the most important knowledge from their learning so that they can apply it confidently in lessons, assessments and future study.

Through regular retrieval practice, we help students develop stronger habits of independent learning and academic success.
